Age Groups Classes and Curriculum

As a studio who values the growth and commitment of our dancers from all ages, it’s our pleasure to offer a wide variety of styles for all ages to suit the different needs of students.

‘baby ballet’ & Preschool Classes   Ballet, Jazz and Tap

These classes are an introduction to classical ballet, Jazz Dance and Tap, using creative, imaginative role-playing and fun props. This class may involve pretending to be animals, playing instruments to learn rhythm, learning balancing, skipping and running and techniques using costumes and ribbons, or picking up “diamonds” (shhh…they’re actually just feathers) from the ground to develop their hand-eye coordination. These classes are suitable for both boys and girls who are having so much fun that they don’t even realise that they are learning the fundamentals of ballet technique, Jazz dance or Tap along the way.

‘baby ballet’

‘Tinies’ Ballet Mummy and Me: This is a great class for our 1.5 – 3 year olds. We use music they know and love while learning beginner dance movements with a ballet basis with mum or carer by their side. Toddlers adore learning the basics of ballet through movement, play and song. Toddlers and young children are encouraged to further develop and explore their ability to move, dance and sing in our Tinies classes. These fun classes involve lots of smiles and laughter – the perfect toddler class! The little ones love the dances and catchy songs – and so do the adults! We foster the development of their coordination and independence in a creative, happy, fun way by imitating animals and role playing. We also use obstacle courses and dancing to nursery rhymes and children’s ballet music, to foster a love for dance and enhance gross motor skills.

‘Movers’ Tiny Tot Ballet: Our dedicated team delight in encouraging young preschool children to use their imagination while learning ballet fundamentals through enhanced movement and song. Focusing on developing gross motor skills, basic ballet, rhythm and confidence, this class helps children feel comfortable with their own natural ability and their surroundings. Increased dancing and imagination are learnt in a fun environment with singing along to music, helping to build basic principles and social skills that will serve them well as they approach school age. This is a great class for our 3-4 year olds. We use music they know and love, while developing natural movements with  ballet basis with or without mum. We learn all about warming up, stretching using nursery rhymes, story time, role playing and obstacle courses along with lots of props, to continue to foster a love for dance while developing gross motor skills as well as putting together a dance for the end of year concert.

‘Groovers A’ Pre-Primary Ballet: As your child develops and learns about their world around them, these classes will focus on improving coordination, self-control and ballet technique in a non-competitive environment. This class takes children of pre-school age to a higher level of musical ability, balance, posture and confidence – and is designed for children who love to dance and learn ballet, but don’t want to feel intimidated by joining a competitive class. Classes are welcoming, fun and a fantastic way to learn new dance routines and technique without any pressure. This is a class for our older pre-schoolers who are 4-5 years old and about to get ready to start school. The music for this class is fun and familiar to them and expands on the techniques learned by our younger classes. We do some warming up, stretching, progression across the room (including skips, pony gallops and basic turning skills) as well as putting together a dance for the concert.

‘Groovers B’ Primary Ballet: As your child develops and learns about their world around them, these classes continue to focus on improving coordination, self-control and ballet technique in a non-competitive environment whilst developing confidence and the beginnings of leadership. This class takes children of early school age to a higher level of musical ability, balance, posture and confidence – and is designed for children who love to dance and learn ballet, but don’t want to feel intimidated by joining a competitive class. They have the opportunity of presenting their class work in their very first class assessment and receive their friendly and encouraging first report and certificate for that important achievement. Classes are welcoming, fun and a fantastic way to learn new dance routines and technique without any pressure. This is a class for our primary children who are 5 -6 years old and just starting school. The music for this class is fun and familiar to them and expands on the techniques learned by our younger classes. We do some warming up, stretching, floor work and progression across the room (including skips, pony gallops and basic turning skills) as well as putting together a dance for the concert.

FUNKY TOTS               JAZZ/TAP Combination Classes

These Jazz/Funk and Tap combination classes are available for Pre-Schoolers to Primary age students. They are fun, fast moving and energetic classes, which aim to introduce our youngest dancers in a fun way to both dance styles. These classes develop rhythm, timing, musicality and coordination using games, up to date movements and music. Your little one will feel right at home with this one-of-a-kind class for children who love to make a noise in their tap shoes and love to dance to their favourite songs. In this upbeat, fun class, children aged from 3 upwards will learn basic tap and jazz steps and routines, set to catchy songs and develop technique and performing skills without any pressure. In these classes your child will be learning super fun basic Jazz and  Tap skills in an imaginative way while playing with props and musical instruments to help promote spatial awareness, coordination, musical awareness and rhythm. They will learn steps including isolations of the body along with toe-heel, heel-toe, stamps and shuffles as well as making as much noise as they can in our fun, safe and educational environment, as well as putting together dances for the concert.

MIDDLE SCHOOL        DEGREE 1 TO DEGREE 2 (A, B & C)

“This system of training is recommended by the Movement and Dance Education Centre and is based on the Russian Vaganova System of training as taught in the famous Vaganova Academic Choreographic School in Leningrad. This teaching programme leads directly to the syllabus adopted by the Australian Ballet School which is also based on the Vaganova System” – Laurel Martyn OBE.

This includes: Classical Work: This retains its major importance and has been designed to provide a gradual technical progression. Students will be able to progress at their own rate. More emphasis will be placed on the development of dance quality, style and personal expression to enhance this technique. Creative/Free Movement: This gives the children the opportunity to develop their natural sense of movement and personal creativity. This will incorporate more improvisation and personal input from the students while developing better musical awareness and understanding. Folk & Group Dances: This is important for the development of strength, rhythm and style will continue to be developed and will involve group and partner work

SENIOR SCHOOL        DEGREE 3 to 6 & EXCELLENCE (A, B & C)

These classes will continue to develop from the previous years’ studies with a more choreographic emphasis. They will also include repertoire based study, composition and if physically suitable, Pointe Work.  These developments will challenge and inspire students

BALLET EXAMS

Our vast experience shows that formal exams present a unique opportunity for the students to display and take pride in how hard they work and are able to progress in their classes. Our exam students always find their exam experience to be uplifting, beneficial and rewarding.

All students are encouraged to take the classical ballet examinations in the LMDS although they are not compulsory. These offer positive goals for the students to work towards and offer a challenge, with a great sense of achievement on completion. These are approached at each student’s individual pace, with both Assessment A (progress) and Certificates C (final) offered. Examinations also give parents a guide about their child’s progress and an indication of the expertise, professionalism and standards upheld in the school. They are held at the ballet studio, in a friendly and familiar environment, during the third term and are conducted by their class teacher. The school has had an ongoing 100% pass rate in examinations, from Primary to Advanced/Degree 6 level.

All students from Primary to Stage 2 have exams available on one class per week.

Students in Stage 3 and Stage 4 are divided into A’s and C’s and either take two lessons per week or take two years to complete Stage 3 and Stage 4.

Students in Degrees 1, Degree 2 and Degree 3 are divided into A’s, B’s and C’s are recommended to take two lessons per week and can take two to three years to complete each of these Degrees if required.

Students from Degrees 4 – 6 are recommended to take three lessons per week and can take two to four years to complete each of these Degrees, especially at the highest levels.

Two to Three Pointe Classes each week are also recommended to achieve the strength required for the Pointe work sections at the higher levels and the Conditioning (Stretch/Strengthen) classes are available from Degree 1 to Adults with no prior experience

Pre-Pointe and Pointe classes are only available to students from Degree 2 and up who are doing two other ballet classes (and are only allowed onto Pointe after the teacher has sent them for a dance physiotherapy report)

NB: Only students enrolled in a Term 3 class are able to dance in the end of year concert item for that class (Currently not applicable to Adult ballet)

What happens in a ballet exam?

The students will come to the studio about 20 to 30 minutes before their exam begins. Their hair would be done before arrival, and appropriate uniforms worn. They will enter the ballet studio (with their teacher) and greet their examiner. Exam students will learn their examiner’s name prior to the exam so they can greet them by name. Over the course of the exam (the length of exam is dependent on stage or degree being examined), they will perform their entire class work for the examiner, as a group. There is not a theoretical/written exam involved. Once the examining body has completed the marking process the student will be presented with their exam result, an exam certificate, as well as comments and areas for improvement on their performance. A Report and a Certificate will be presented in class.
